How does Samson S3 differ from Internet based single sign-on?
Samson S3 is focused on Enterprise Security. Samson S3 is a resident program on the workstation, be it a client machine, laptop, tablet PC or CE device. S3 is meant to be a security solution that secures the entire workstation, not just the users session. In the case of Internet or browser based single sign-ons, it is possible to simply terminate the browser, or reboot the system to gain control of the machine. The process of authentication cannot be secure if the hosting platform is not controlled. S3 is focused on the actual security of the workstation and the single sign-on presented to the potential user.
  • S3 is not limited to enterprise client server applications; applications that use browser user interfaces are easily supported by S3.
  • S3 is a unique combination of security and single sign-on which produces a secure single sign-on. Many single sign-on systems are simply authentication to any client system providing access to various applications. Security beyond authentication is seldom the focus of those types of single sign-on solutions.
  • S3 is an installed solution that protects the target workstation from undesirable activities that occur from use. Simply terminating specific components of the S3 solution will not free the desktop from S3 control. S3 is a secure single sign-on, meaning it functions in an understood environment that matches a description given to it by an administrator. Failure to understand the working environment causes S3 to deny user access to the single sign-on applications and potentially deny access to the system. In some cases, based upon options set by and administrator, S3 may make the target system unusable.
  • S3 cannot be terminated, it runs as a service.
  • S3 is not intended to be a generic solution for the Internet, it is a solution to provide single sign-on to an enterprises trusted systems.
  • S3 can function over the Internet with encrypted communication to the S3 Administration Server.
  • S3 is intended to function over large private networks. S3 traffic is concentrated to small periods of communication to the server and a proactive client that watches over the client to insure smooth, secure operations.
  • S3 was created for organizations that want to control their own hardware. It is not meant to be a generic controller of external hardware (Internet café systems, airport kiosks, etc.) that is not owned by the enterprise.
